![]() ![]() ![]() He ducks behind the curtain before introducing L.A.’s original American ska band, The Untouchables. Cette ode l'amour et Los Angeles, depuis enrichie de plusieurs autres courts romans, a bris tous les codes lors de sa parution et sduit plusieurs gnrations de lecteurs de tous les ges, propulsant son auteure au rang d'icne. The book follows the young girl, Weetzie Bat, and he best friend, Dirk, as they embrace their love for 1950s and seek out the best hot spots relating to this era. ![]() Through the thick crowd of 20- and 30-somethings, I glimpse Harry Perry’s turban, accessorized with a black visor. This coming-of-age novel follows the eponymous Weetzie Bat and her best friend Dirk as they navigate life and love in a timeless, dreamlike version of Los. ![]() The scene is a bit worn out like a Hollywood miniature, with scant groups of aging rockers sipping craft beer near a sign that admonishes, “If you stage dive, you go home.” Photo by Cynthia Drake.įinally, I visit the Viper Room, which came after the time of Weetzie, but would have likely been part of her world. Later in my trip, I venture out alone in West Hollywood to some of the clubs that are still around from the Weetzieverse like Whiskey a Go Go (gay clubs like Rage and Revolver where Weetzie and Dirk went “duck hunting” are still there, too). For the first time, searching for the remnants of Weetzie Bat’s L.A., those shimmery, weird beacons in a city that casts away old things, I can empathize with this character’s sadness. Initially released in 1989, Weetzie Bat is the first of a series known as Dangerous Angels. ![]()

![]() His new collection will delight his growing number of fans, and provide a perfect introduction for new readers. Wallace delights in leftfield observation, mining the ironic, the surprising and the illuminating from every situation. Thought-provoking and playful, this collection confirms David Foster Wallace as one of the most imaginative young writers around. That may sound patronizing, but having watched this film twice now, knitting together the gossamer strands of plot while searching for. Wallace’s stories present a world where the bizarre and the banal are interwoven and where hideous men appear in many different guises. In this thought-provoking and playful short story collection, David Foster Wallace nudges at the boundaries of fiction with inimitable wit and seductive. It's unbelievably sweet that John Krasinski put his blood, sweat, and presumably, profits from The Office into writing and directing a film adaptation of David Foster Wallace's Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Among the stories are ‘The Depressed Person’, a dazzling and blackly humorous portrayal of a woman’s mental state ‘Adult World’, which reveals a woman’s agonised consideration of her confusing sexual relationship with her husband and ‘Brief Interviews with Hideous Men’, a dark, hilarious series of portraits of men whose fear of women renders them grotesque. In his startling and singular new short story collection, David Foster Wallace nudges at the boundaries of fiction with inimitable wit and seductive intelligence. ![]() ![]() Eona is under pressure to complete her Dragoneye training whilst undertaking a quest she never asked for. ![]() This begins an adventure of intrigue, magic, and political suspense as Eona is thrust into a world full of deadly enemies and she is forced to choose a political side by protecting the emperor and fighting against the rebels who would stab him in the back and overthrow him. Sadly, Eona fails to attract the Rat Dragon of that year, but is instead chosen by the mysterious Mirror Dragon who hasn’t been seen in centuries. If her disguise is discovered, then she risks a painful death. ![]() Eona’s world has some backward notions when it comes to feminism, and so only boys can become apprentices. The story is told from the eyes of Eona, a young girl who disguises herself as the boy Eon in order to be chosen as a Dragoneye apprentice and gain all the riches, power and prestige that go with it. Also known as Rise of the Dragoneye, the Eon duology is inspired by Chinese mythology in a world where apprentices can be trained to commune with dragon spirits based on the Chinese zodiac in order to help control the weather and prevent devastating storms. ![]() One of my favourite Young Adult fantasy books is Eon: Dragoneye Reborn and its sequel Eona: The Last Dragoneye by Australian author Alison Goodman. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kill Order was originally published as 'Blood Honeymoon'.
